Access All Areas
During the Dutch National Ballets summer project 2000, Amsterdams huge Music Theatre was turned inside out. The audience was seated on the stage, and the performance used the whole backstage area, which is 4 times bigger than the usual stage. Half-way through the performance, the audience was divided by large screens, some seating sections moved aside and finally everyone had to accompany the dancers to the large opera studio.
In co-operation with choreographers Reida Benteifour and Asley Page, set designer Pepijn van Zoest (Dogtroep) and Percussion Group The Hague, I attempted to find the optimum and most sensational use of this huge space and machinery.
For example: I recorded many sounds of the theatre itself. I then transmitted these sounds trough 22 independent speakers all over the hall in an attempt to bring the building to life.
Usually, in theatre, reality is concealed in order to create an illusion. In this project however, I tried to extend reality by careful and subtle manipulation. See also Sounds
