La Nuit Utrecht 2005

Starting on one of Utrecht's main squares, the Neude, a loudly playing samba band and a saxophone orchestra marched in the direction of the Tivoli theatre. In the hall where the box office is located, texts on art theory printed on textile were exhibited and the entrance of the main hall was overgrown with geraniums. Mint tea and massage, hair dressers and nail stylists were part of the reception; the chosen experienced a romantic and hilarious moment in the toilets.
At the start, electronic sounds and a new installation by Hans van Koolwijk produced an intense and electrifying immersion in sound. The music migrated from the musicians onstage and the singers and students amongst the audience to the student symphony orchestra on the balcony. Suddenly a samba band with dancers started to play with the DJ and the saxophone orchestra in a fiery climax. Throughout the entire hall, the students' drumming as well as interventions from the actors could be heard. Animations, interspersed with pieces from cult films, were projected on television sets in the halls home-like setting.
At midnight, a theatrical supper was served on the balcony with edible flowers, food that was cooked with the use of an iron and a bloody dessert.
After an exhilarating and successful debut for the students who had participated in the thigh-drumming workshops, a colourful Nuit followed with musical duels between the musicians and the DJ.
At 4 oclock in the morning, the Nuit ended with a continental breakfast.
