Synergy

Club/ Hotel Arena Amsterdam, 3 februari 2001

On the night of 3-2-1, a large-scale music and art installation concept of mine was co-produced with Cindy Pielstroom and Connecting People. All the spaces
of club/hotel Arena (a former monastery now in use as
a kind of trendy place) were provided with sound,
decoration and performers. After a welcome in the
lobby with renaissance music, champagne, and an art
exhibition, the audience members were led through a spooky restaurant with forested
corridors, and then down the stairs to the fresco hall
(the former chapel, now functioning as dance club).

I composed a spatial piece especially for this event,
which started with recorders, performed by Malle Symen
Quartet, and evolved into a large ensemble piece for
brass and percussion. The musicians were located all
over the space. After this section, the music
developed first into a performance of my contemporary
band, The Backhaus, and then gradually to the set of
DJ Per.
