Ambient Backhaus

This band set out to prove that new contemporary music can be groovy. We looked for a mix of the depth and complexity of notated composition and the energy and power of a rock band. Members were all classically trained, and wanted to play together in a creative and direct way, without losing themselves in shallow and confusing improvisations. Several composers made pieces that included improvisational elements and electronics. Only 3 performances have come to fruition so far, but we will meet again! The members were: Ties Mellema, saxes; Bastiaan Woltjer, trombone; William Bakker, synthesisers; Rik Elstgeest, percussion; Bo Koek, drums; Joost Nieuwenburg, electronics; me playing viola, and Jelte van Andel on double bass.
