Monotonous
Due to the pianos ease of use as a compositional tool, many musical pieces consist of a lot of notes. Many orchestral pieces are initially composed on piano and subsequently instrumented. This may seem logical, but to my mind this method has greatly influenced the character of Western classical music and it reduces ones creativity to mere note juggling - a disease which continues to pervade contemporary music composition, despite sustained efforts to break this cycle by sound wizards such as Varese, Cage and Xenakis.
Restricting my choice of notes to one single tone forced me to create this piece with only timbre and rhythm at my disposal. The performer too was forced to explore each nook and cranny of this one single note. The spatial arrangement of the performers required them to listen carefully and react to each other. It is possible to play the piece almost by heart, enabling the players to keep an eye on each other and to react swiftly to signals and cues.
