Body
Music
for the National Ballet, Holland Festival 2004
This
piece developed organically: sounds emerged, gradually forming melodies and
condensing into slow grooves. In collaboration with choreographer Ted Brandsen
I wrote a script describing, in an abstract manner, the movement of
consciousness during different life stages. Growth, struggle, blossoming, wisdom, insight, decline and dissolution
can all be perfectly expressed in music.
The
music, or if you wish the sound, is not structured, i.e. with well-defined
elements and recurring themes, but is constantly evolving. Over and over
something new emerges. In subtle and obvious ways new sounds spring up, as if
the music, rather than being composed, is giving birth to itself.
